Ex-police sergeant Hillary Tagabuel arrested anew
Hillary John Tagabuel, a former police sergeant who has a pending criminal case for his alleged involvement in a car insurance scam, was arrested Sunday night on allegations that he beat up his girlfriend at her residence in Koblerville.
Tagabuel, 40, was arrested for assault and battery, disturbing the peace, and criminal mischief. His bail was set at $1,500 cash. Preliminary hearing will be on July 28 at 9am.
Detective Peter A. Aldan stated in his report that a police officer had responded to the victim’s house after receiving a call. The responding officer she saw the victim crying and shaking, the right side of her face swollen and red. Responding medics checked the victim, who complained of pain in the face and neck.
The victim told police that Tagabuel slapped her on the left and right side of her face. He also allegedly ripped the front door’s screen, damaging the hinges.
Police officers arrested Tagabuel at 8:23pm on Sunday.
The victim told police that Tagabuel is an abusive person throughout their seven-year relationship. She described him as a very jealous person, obsessed, and controlling. She alleged that he has been verbally, mentally, and physically abusing her.
At yesterday’s hearing, assistant public defender Richard Miller told the court that he could not represent Tagabuel as their office is already representing Tagabuel’s co-defendant in the pending criminal case.
Superior Court associate judge Kenneth L. Govendo said the court will appoint the same lawyer representing Tagabuel in his pending case.
Govendo ordered the defendant to stay away from the alleged victim.
In June 2008, Tagabuel was among several persons arrested for their alleged involvement in a car insurance scam. The Office of the Attorney General subsequently charged Tagabuel, Yu Jai Feng Cepeda, and Serafin Esperancilla with conspiracy to commit theft by deception. The three allegedly falsified information about car crashes to obtain money from insurance companies.
The jury trial for Tagabuel in the insurance scam case will be on Aug. 1, 2011.
