$77K grant for emergency food, shelter programs

The CNMI has been awarded federal funds under the Emergency Food and Shelter National Board Program.
The CNMI has been selected to receive an award of $77,066 under 29 of the EFSP to supplement emergency food and shelter programs in the Commonwealth. The award for the Commonwealth is based upon the total number of unemployed individuals as compared to the total number of unemployed in all qualifying jurisdictions.
The selection was made by the EFSP that is chaired by the Federal Emergency Management Agency and consists of representatives from The Salvation Army, American Red Cross, United Jewish Communities, Catholic Charities, USA, National Council of Churches of Christ in the U.S.A, and United Way of America.
A local board made up of the mayor of Saipan, Karidat, American Red Cross, the DCCA Division of Youth Services, Salvation Army, Youth with a Mission and others will determine how the funds appropriated by Congress to the CNMI are to be distributed among local emergency food and shelter programs.
Under the terms of the grant from the National Board, local agencies chosen to receive funds must:
1) be private voluntary non-profits or unit of government;
2) have an accounting system;
3) practice nondiscrimination;
4) have demonstrated the capacity to deliver emergency food and/or shelter programs;
5) if they are a private voluntary organization, they must have a voluntary board; and
6) any funds awarded to local recipient organizations under EFSP Phase 29 must be expended by Dec. 31, 2011.
