Ma-On intensifies, but moves away from NMI

Typhoon Ma-On continued yesterday to move away from the Northern Marianas. packing maximum sustained winds of 125 miles per hour.

The National Weather Service and the Emergency Management Office said, however, that heavy seas and high surf along with gusty winds will continue another day or two in the Marianas as Typhoon Ma-On moves west away from the region.

NWS said small boats and water craft should exercise caution and remain secured and stay in port through the day, Friday.

“Do not attempt inter-island travel until winds and seas subside,” NWS warned.

From 115 miles per hour yesterday morning, Typhoon Ma-On’s maximum sustained winds increased to 125 mph in the afternoon.

As of 1pm, the center was 275 miles west-northwest of Agrihan, 305 miles northwest of Pagan, 325 miles northwest of Alamagan, 450 miles north-northwest of Saipan, and 520 miles north-northwest of Guam.

As of 7am, the center of the typhoon was 200 miles northwest of Agrihan, 235 miles northwest of Pagan, 260 miles northwest of Alamagan, 405 miles north-northwest of Saipan, and 490 miles north-northwest of Guam.

NWS urged Guan and CNMI residents to avoid venturing near exposed reefs and beaches especially those along west facing reefs as rip currents are life threatening.
