Matansa Football Club’s preparation for the fall season got a big boost after it received a donation from Mobil Oil Marianas Islands, Inc.

Mobil donated $800 to Matansa to cover a portion of players’ registration fee. The donation turnover ceremony took place at Mobil Oil’s office in Puerto Rico on July 1.

“We have a program at Matansa Football Club called Free Lunch-Free Soccer. If you are qualified under the Public School System free meal program, you don’t need to pay the $25 annual club registration fee. The club fee covers the $15 registration fee per player to Northern Marianas Islands Football Association and $10 for uniforms,” Matansa general secretary Joven Cruz said.

“This donation will help us cover the cost of registration fee for many of our players. Matansa Football Club is very grateful to Mobil Oil Marianas Islands Inc,” Cruz added.

For the donor’s part, Anthony Wenceslao, field operations manager of Mobil Oil Marianas Islands, Inc, said their company has always been supportive of programs for our youth.

“Mobil is proud to support sports groups, such as the Matansa Football Club, and programs that aim to develop teamwork, friendship, and active lifestyle among our youth. Congratulations for a job well done to all the Matansa FC players and their families for a terrific season,” Wenceslao said.

Matansa’ U15 girls team won last spring season’s championship for the club’s fifth straight title in that age group. The U15 champion squad finished the season with a league-best 7-1-1 win-draw-loss card, besting teams from Paire, MP United, and Tan Holdings.

In the boys U15, Matansa placed runner-up to MP United last spring and is expected to give the latter a run for its money in the fall season, which begins in September.

Matansa is one of the first football clubs formed in the CNMI and has produced athletes who were chosen to represent the CNMI in off-island competitions. The recent ones were Sean Perez and Jirech Yobech, who will suit up for the CNMI U15 Team that will compete in the East Asian Football Federation U15 Youth Tournament in Taipei, Taiwan later this month.
