The Northern Islands were placed under tropical storm watch yesterday morning after a tropical depression in the area intensified into a tropical storm.

The National Weather Service in Guam and the CNMI Emergency Management Office announced at 8am yesterday that a tropical storm watch is now in effect for Agrihan, Pagan, and Alamagan.

As of 1pm yesterday, tropical storm Ma-On was moving west-northwest at 10 miles per hour, packing maximum sustained winds at 60 mph.

At the time, the center was 430 miles east-northeast of Pagan, 430 miles east of Agrihan, 435 miles east-northeast of Alamagan, 530 miles northeast of Saipan, and 655 miles northeast of Guam.

NWS predicts the tropical storm to become a typhoon this morning, Thursday.

Acting governor Eloy S. Inos advised the public including those on Pagan and Alamagan to closely follow the progress and evolution of the tropical storm through the EMO and local media.

Tropical Storm Ma-On is expected to pass about 175 miles north of Pagan around noon today, Thursday.

NWS advises people in the Northern Islands to take preliminary steps to protect life and property before the arrival of damaging winds, which are possible today, Thursday.

“Be prepared to take shelter if a tropical storm warning is issued possibly on short notice,” NWS said.

At 7am yesterday, Tropical Storm Ma-On was moving west-northwest at 9 mph with maximum sustained winds of 45 mph. EMO said heavy showers and scattered thunderstorms caused by Ma-On will produce heavy rains in the CNMI Thursday throughout Friday.
