Public Safety Commissioner Ramon Mafnas confirmed yesterday an ongoing search at some sewer manholes to locate missing sisters Faloma and Maleina Luhk. There was still no trace of the girls as of press time.

Mafnas said they are opening select sewer manholes on Saipan with the assistance of Commonwealth Utilities Corp.’s personnel.

He did not reveal the locations of the targeted manholes. He also did not elaborate as to why manholes are now the subject of the search.

“We are also conducting underwater and on ground searches along the cliff line at Coral Ocean Point and Agingan Point,” Mafnas said.

Meanwhile, FBI special agent Tom Simon said that finding the backpacks would be a clue to the girls’ whereabouts.

“That’s our only agenda regarding the backpacks,” said Simon when asked whether the search for backpacks had something to do with speculation about a journal that one of the girls had apparently written prior to their disappearance.

Simon said the girls were reportedly on their way to school when they disappeared, and presumably, they had their backpacks.

FBI agents and CNMI law enforcers scoured the Marpi landfill for almost a week to find the backpacks or clues to the girls’ disappearance.

Ten-year-old Faloma and 9-year-old Maleina were reportedly last seen near a school bus stop pavilion in As Teo on May 25.

A $50,000 cash reward has been put up for information on the girls’ whereabouts.
