Orsini voted MHS student council president
Marianas High School students selected Vinni Orsini as its new council president, tasked to represent them in various issues affecting student learning.
Orsini told Saipan Tribune that he was motivated by his peers to run for the position before classes ended last month.
“I was encouraged to run for president by my classmates and I was scared because it was just my first year in MHS. I wasn’t really confident, but I realized if I wanted to speak up for people and represent them in the future, then I should start by making a difference in high school,” he said yesterday, adding that he was surprised that people were so nice when he went around campus asking for votes.
Even the meanest looking people, he said, turned out to be very friendly when Orsini asked for their support and he was able to make new friends along the way.
“This made me realize that anyone is capable of doing something they would have never done before. I began to see that everyone has the potential to be a friend. This election made me realize you don’t have to only talk to your group of friends. MHS is a big school and everyone has a unique way of thinking and everyone has unique ideas that you would not have known if you walked by them without even smiling at them,” he said.
When asked about his leadership priorities, the newly elected council president vowed to improve the participation of both students and parents in the school’s various programs and activities. MHS is home to over 1,000 students each year.
“My No. 1 priority is to get more people involved in school events. A lot of times, students don’t have the clothing style set for a spirit dress day, and so I want to try to actually decorate the hallways for as many holidays as possible because, then, everyone would be able to feel the spirit! A good friend of mine suggested we have an eco-week and I like that idea. Another friend suggested we have an ‘emotional evaluation’ day and I like that idea, too. There are a lot of other ideas and I know that our principal has a good way of making ideas come to life,” said Orsini.
The sophomore student pointed out that the school’s student council plays a pivotal role in the success of enrollees and the school.
“Student councils are vital to any school, especially one as large as MHS. I think the teachers have enough on their plate, so it’s really up to the students to create fun things to do besides sitting in a classroom all day. I like student councils, because even if I do not get paid for it, I do it because I love it, and I like helping out, even if it is only by contributing ideas. It seems that in every aspect of life, students are never taken seriously, but in school, the students are No. 1, and we need fellow students to make sure we keep it that way,” added Orsini.
