The 2010 Asian Pacific Regional Tournament and arrival off off-island sports officials were the talk of the town last week.

The CNMI Big League All-Stars were in the Philippines to compete in the ASPAC and won their first two games before finishing the double-round robin elimination with a 3-1 record. The CNMI youth sluggers eventually made it to the finals, but lost to the Philippines, 1-7. The host won over the CNMI twice in the ASPAC, denying the Commonwealth anew of a World Series trip.

Back on Saipan, the CNMI welcomed three visiting officials.

Pacific Games Council president Vidhya Lakhan and executive director Andrew Minogue were on Saipan for four days for a site inspection visit of proposed facilities for the 2017 Pacific Mini Games.

The two officials visited the Marianas High School, Oleai Sports Complex, Hopwood Junior High School, Pacific Islands Club tennis courts, Coral Ocean Point Golf Course, NMC Gymnasium, the proposed location for a new football field in Koblerville, Kan Pacific Swimming Pool, and Laolao Bay Golf Resort and gave these facilities a good grade.

Lakhan and Minogue also met with government and local sports officials to gauge the CNMI’s capability to host the Pacific Mini Games five years from now.

Also making a visit on Saipan was Oceania Badminton regional development manager Nadia Bleaken. She stayed on Saipan for a week and conducted a youth clinic for four days and umpire and adult players seminar last Saturday.

Other significant events last week were Armatech’s title win in the Miller Lite caging; the announcements of the members of the CNMI U15 football and swim teams; conclusion of the IT&E badminton tournament; Thea Minor and Rafael Jones’ participation to the 2011 Air Pacific South Pacific Open Junior Championships in Lautoka, Fiji; Mobil’s Game 1 win against Smart Cagers in their best-of-three finals series in the QQ Cup; the 70 riders who joined the Butch Journey to XTERRA Hawaii Bike Race; and Tammy Ackerman’s upset victory in the Inaugural Salvation Army Food Bank 5km Fun Run & Walk.
