UFO scraps float for LibDay parade
The worsening economic decline has prompted the United Filipino Organization not to join the float competition of the 2011 Liberation Day Parade.
But president Bong Malasarte assured that officers and members of the umbrella organization of some 30 Filipino groups on island will still take part in the actual parade on Monday morning.
“The officers voted to scrap the plan to participate in the float competition for lack of budget,” he explained. “It’s hard to solicit donations these days because everybody is affected by the economic situation.”
Malasarte said UFO officers will have a meeting to finalize the group’s logistics for the Fourth of July parade.
“Even though we won’t be joining the float contest, we will still participate in the parade,” he told Saipan Tribune. “We want to express our heartfelt support for this island community which a lot of Filipinos have considered ‘home’ for many years.”
Malasarte encouraged all member organizations to be well-represented during Monday’s festivities, arguably the largest community event on island.
“On behalf of our organization, we want to send our Happy Liberation Day greetings to the people of the CNMI. The United Filipino Organization joins you in commemorating this significant occasion,” added Malasarte.
