Outgoing San Vicente Elementary School principal Joaquina Salas received yesterday a plaque of recognition from the Board of Education and the Public School System honoring her 30 years of service.

In a ceremony at the board’s conference room, Education Commissioner Rita A. Sablan named Salas as an outstanding employee who dedicated her life to student learning.

The commissioner noted the humble beginning of the retiring educator who was hired as a teacher aide in 1982 and was paid just $1.37 per hour. She lauded the perseverance and dedication of Salas who served as classroom teacher, vice principal, and school administrator. All these positions were served at San Vicente Elementary School.

The commissioner admitted that it’s hard to let go of an exemplary educator like Salas.

For Salas, being an educator is not about money.

“Throughout my journey as an educator and administrator, I have learned a lot and I have seen a lot of positive changes. Yes, I started at $1.37 cents [back then] but for me it’s not about money. It is about what I can do to help students,” she said.

Salas is moving to Arizona this summer where she plans to continue teaching.
