Police consider underwater search
The Department of Public Safety is mulling an underwater search as the mysterious disappearance of sisters Faloma and Maleina Luhk enters its fifth week today, Wednesday.
Press secretary Angel Demapan told Saipan Tribune yesterday that DPS is considering doing an underwater search for the Luhk sisters.
“But this is largely dependent on the weather and the level of visibility. The department has not disclosed any further details on this matter,” Demapan said.
“Operation Hope” had local and federal authorities doing ground searches for weeks, while a helicopter from the U.S. Navy and a C-130 plane from the U.S. Air Force did an aerial search for a day. Only underwater search has not been done.
Last Friday, DPS searched the cliff line of Banzai Cliff using a search and rescue boat but failed to find any trace of the girls.
Demapan said that DPS takes all tips seriously regardless of whether it comes from a family member or from an anonymous caller.
“Again, the department is taking all steps to ensure that ongoing investigations are not jeopardized and therefore cannot get into more details at this time,” he said.
The Luhk sisters were reported missing near a bus stop in As Teo last May 25. A $50,000 cash reward has been put up for information on the girls’ whereabouts.
