Seventy-riders competed in the muddy Butch Journey to XTERRA Hawaii Bike Race last Sunday.

The list included Nap Dizon, who completed the road bike division with a best time of one hour, 24 minutes and 25 seconds, just a second ahead of Willy Barbo. Aldrin Sta. Ana rounded out the Top 3 with his 1:24:50. Susan Marchitti ruled the women’s division after clocking in at 2:06:54.

Bikers in the road bike category started the race at Paupau and then headed up to Radar Station, Suicide Cliff, Bird Island, Grotto, and Banzai and back to Paupau for the finish. They returned to the finish line with their shirts and bikes covered with mud as it rained the night before the race kicked off.

In the MTB championship course, Bob Ferrer topped the field with a time of 1:00:31. Lewie Tenorio came in at second with his 1:01:41, while Noel Altamirano finished third after submitting 1:03:59. Juanita Fajardo won in the women’s MTB championship course after logging 2:10:52.

Bikers in the MTB championship course raced up to Radar Station, turned right to one million gallon, went up to Kimikaze, Autobahn, and Grotto trails, Cowtown, and Banzai before heading back to Paupau for the finish.

In the MTB sports course, the Top 3 finishers completed the race in less than one hour. Harold Balana placed first at 52:05, followed by Bob Oropesa (52:47), and Erico Castro (56:25). Esther Ada and Sherly Camacho timed in at 1:30:54 and 1:44:22, respectively, to finish in the Top 2 in the women’s division. The MTB sports course had the same starting and finish line, but after the Kimikaze trail, they headed back to Paupau.

Sunday’s race was a fundraiser for Butch Sublemente’s trip to XTERRA World in Hawaii this October. Sublemente thanked PIC, Brabu Pharmacy, IT&E, Top Notch, Marpac, Traders Insurance, Tropex Garden, DFS Galleria, MVA, Taro Sue, Dynamic Massage, Triple J Fresh Marker, Joshua Berger, Stuart Smith, Paul Dujua, Romy Lanuza, Stan Good, Lito Mendoza, Rommel Bartolo, and Saipan Cyclers for supporting the fundraising race.
