4 advance to IT&E badminton finals
Four players secured finals berth in the 2011 IT&E Singles/Doubles Badminton Tournament after prevailing in separate semis matches on Thursday night at the TSL Sports Complex.
In the first semis game in the women’s C singles, Irish Pagarao pulled off an upset over over Cris Obaldo took set up a finals tiff against Kim Boranah, who also stunned Roma Barlao in the second semis duel.
Before the loss to Pagarao, Obaldo was unbeaten in four games in the elimination round and took the No. 1 seed in Pool B. Boranah finished Pool B at second place with a 2-2 record, beating Elna Curate in the tiebreak. Barlao topped Pool A with a 3-1 mark, while Pagarao came in at second with her 2-1 slate.
In the men’s C singles, it will be Jerome Malasarte versus Luis Camacho. Malasarte moved to the semis first after downing Dick Koo and Camacho followed suit after slipping past Mahesh Balakrishnan.
The women’s and men’s C singles title matches will be played tonight. The championship matches in other divisions in singles and doubles competitions will be completed this weekend.
In other results last Thursday, Noli Santos (2-2) clinched the last semis seat in the men’s B1 singles and will duel Pool A top finisher Saul Gargalo (4-0) in the Final Four tonight.
In the men’s A doubles, Gary Bandoja and Oh Inbog and Hapi Gabriel and Ezekiel Macario notched the last two semis berths. Bandoja and Inbog topped Pool A and Gabriel and Macario finished second to advance against Andrew Galvez and Rodwealth Espana and Dick Guintu and Narlou Achas, respectively.
In the men’s C doubles, the semis pairing are Dick Koo and Joel Ortega versus Charlie Borja and Carlo Conwi and Brandon Talania and Jerome Malasarte against Eydie Uy and Rick Brien.
