CNMI teams make semis in MBT
The CNMI advanced to the semifinals of both the girls and boys divisions of the 2011 U15 Micronesian Basketball Tournament being played at the Palau National Stadium.
The Commonwealth’s cagebelles took the No. 2 seed in the playoffs after whipping Belau, 76-18, last Wednesday, and finishing the round-robin competition with a 2-1 record. The Connie Camacho-coached squad absorbed its lone loss at the hands of Guam during the opening day, 36-86.
In the semis, the CNMI girls team was scheduled to face Palau at 5pm yesterday. The Commonwealth bets were favored to beat the host’s first team, as they routed Palau in the preliminary round, 46-39.
The winner of the second semis game between Palau and the CNMI will duel the victor of the Guam-Belau tiff in today’s finals. Guam is unbeaten in the tournament, notching its third win against Palau last Wednesday, 94-43.
The CNMI finished second to Guam in the girls division after a 58-point win over Belau. Rachel Abrams and Jeraldine Castillo joined forces in the Commonwealth’s demolition of the host’s second team, exploding for 27 and 24 points, respectively.
Kayoko Ellis paced the losing squad with eight points, while Trinity Misech chipped in four.
In the boys division, the CNMI also made it to the semis, taking the last and spot after completing the round-robin play with a 1-3 record.
The Commonwealth’s cagers took a break last Wednesday and were set to challenge No. 1 seed Guam in the first semis match slated at 3pm yesterday. The No. 2 pick Palau (3-1) and third-seeded Guahan (2-2) were paired in the other semis game set for 7pm last night.
Guam completed a 4-0 sweep of the elimination round after beating sister team Guahan, 85-49. Kurtis Silvia led Guam’s fourth win, hitting 14 points, while Jose Candosa logged 11. No Guahan player scored in double figures, as Jason Frias, Alliurrel Grape, and Geo Quichocho only managed eight points apiece.
Palau also won the battle of sister teams, topping Belau, 85-58, in the last day of the elimination round. Marvic Ngchar had 26 for Palau, which also drew 15 points from Daniel Carlos. Medermel Yaoch top-scored for the eliminated Belau with 23 markers, while Cody Ngiraungil added 14.
