Judiciary seeks to fill 7 vacancies
The CNMI Judiciary is hiring people to fill seven vacant positions that, if left unfilled, “will leave the courts paralyzed,” according to Chief Justice Miguel S. Demapan and presiding judge Robert C. Naraja.
The vacancies are two law clerks for the Supreme Court, one law clerk for the Superior Court, one deputy clerk for the Superior Court, a secretary for Naraja, one systems administrator, and one computer specialist.
The three law clerk positions will be vacant on June 30, 2011, Aug. 12, 2011, and Sept. 6, 2011. The systems administrator and computer specialist posts will be vacant on Aug. 10, 2011. The date of vacancy for the deputy clerk and secretary positions was listed as “immediately.”
Demapan and Naraja recently notified the CNMI Legislature about the Judiciary’s need to fill the seven positions.
Demapan and Naraja said budgetary resources are available for the personnel costs associated with these vacancies, and that the filling of the vacancies fall within the 74 positions allowed by Public Law 17-21 for the Judiciary.
“The filling of these positions is vitally important to the efficient delivery of essential court services and ultimately the welfare of the CNMI public. These positions are critical to the courtroom operations of the Judiciary,” said Demapan and Naraja in the notice.
The two magistrates said that, while the Judiciary has taken measures to implement austerity hours and freeze hiring due to severe budget constrains and government-wide deficit forecasts, these imminent vacancies, if left unfilled, will leave the courts paralyzed.
