The Marianas Apnea Spearfishing Club is hosting its 5th Annual Spearfishing Tournament this Saturday, June 25, at the Smiling Cove Marina.

Competitors must register with officials by the 6am start time and the event takes place until 3pm, followed by a 4:30pm awards presentation at Smiling Cove Marina.

Entrance fee per person is $50 and teams are limited to three fishermen per boat.

Cash prizes and fishing equipment will be awarded to the Top 5 place finishers. The cash prize amount will depend on the turnout. Some of the equipment prizes include flippers, masks, brush guards, a diving knife, and more.

In addition, an individual prize package will be presented to the fisherman who brings in the heaviest fish.

About 30 participants are expected for this year’s event, including fishermen from Guam and Tinian.

Fish must be whole and weigh at least 1 lb. to be included in the total catch weight; there is no limit to the number of fish in the total-catch weight as long as they ruled acceptable to the standard.

Sharks, rays, red snappers, puffer fish, and aquarium fish will not be allowed in the total catch weight.

The team with the heaviest total-catch weight wins.

Bantalan Boyz’s Morito Asai and teammates Felix and Greg Sassamoto topped last year’s field of 25 with a total-catch weight of 34.8 lbs.

Mar-Pac, Budweiser, Risse International, Docomo Pacific, Cressi Sub, and Aquasmith are sponsoring the event.

Contact Morito Asai at 233-5055 or Richard Seman 285-6014 for registration or for more information.
