Upset in women’s doubles A finals
The tandem of Marlene Peraja and Lani Bartolome clinched the first championship in the 2011 IT&E Singles/Doubles Badminton Tournament after stunning Hannah Choi and So Young Lee in the women’s A doubles finals last Saturday at the TSL Sports Complex.
Peraja and Bartolome swept their favored foes, 21-19, 21-18, to become the first champions crowned in the month-long tournament.
Before the finals, Choi and Lee went undefeated. They swept their round-robin assignments and finished on top of Pool B with their 4-0 record. The Korean duo then advanced to the title match after beating Anna Omori and Michelle Caleon in the semifinals, 21-16, 21-18.
Peraja and Bartolome also took the No. 1 seeding in Pool A with their 3-1 slate and beat Loyda Ito and Cristy Villaflor in the other semis pairing, 21-16, 21-14, to arrange a title showdown against Choi and Lee.
Meanwhile, the semifinals and finals of the remaining doubles and singles divisions will be played this weekend.
In the women’s singles A, the first of the two round-robin competition was completed last week with Hannah Choi topping the four-player field with her clean 3-0 mark. Angie Ito is in second place with a 2-1 slate, while Malou Malasarte and Loyda Ito hold 1-2 and 0-3 cards, respectively. After six games, the Top 2 placers in the group will duke it out for the championship this weekend.
In the women’s singles B, the semis cast includes Marylyn Montano (4-0), Caleon (3-1), Merlie Tolentino (2-2), and Villaflor (1-3). Montano will play Villaflor on Thursday, the same day that Tolentino and Caleon will square off for the other finals berth.
In the women’s singles C, only Cris Obaldo is assured of a semis slot after an unblemished 4-0 slate. Roma Barlao has 3-1 record and has a strong chance of moving into the next round. Irish Pagarao holds a 2-1 mark for third place, while Alma Ortega, Kim Boranah, and Elna Curate are tied for fourth with similar 2-2 records.
Standings and results in the men’s singles and doubles and women’s doubles will be published in Saipan Tribune’s Thursday edition.
