Camacho, Alcantara top SSHS graduates

James Hegarty Camacho and Jan Kimberly Alcantara were hailed most outstanding graduates of Saipan Southern High School during the school’s commencement exercises Friday night.
Camacho, 18, is this year’s recipient of the prestigious Board of Education award and the 2011 class valedictorian. He was also bestowed numerous special recognitions including the gold presidential excellence award, best in English, science, and social studies.
The top honor is the son of Maria and Arthur Camacho and will further his studies at the University of Hawaii-Manoa to pursue a course in biology.
In his valedictory address, Camacho urged his peers to continue to persevere for their future and strive for excellence in education.
This year’s class salutatorian was Jan Kimberly Alcantara, the daughter of Ligaya and Jerry Alcantara. Besides the Commissioner of Education award, the 18-year-old student was also bestowed special recognitions for her academic excellence and achievements.
She will pursue nursing at Northern Marianas College next semester and plans to further her studies at the University of Guam.
For Alcantara, “hard work, patience, and determination” are among the greatest lessons she learned throughout her high school.
Lt. Gov. Eloy Inos bestowed the governor’s award to Mark Nhoevert P. San Juan, while school administrator Jesse Tudela named Coquina Leah T. Teregeyo as the class principal’s leadership awardee.
On the Top Ten list were James Hegarty Camacho, Jan Kimberly Alcantara, So Jung Song, Dahee Kim, Ann Mariel Flores, Li Ra Park, Donovan Jake Tudela, Joseph Jang, Kaelani Marie Demapan, and Fumi Nimura.
SSHS principal Jesse Tudela, along with Board of Education chair Marylou Ada and Education Commissioner Rita Sablan, conferred diplomas to 151 graduates in the graduation ceremony that was attended by hundreds of families, guests, and supporters.
The event was keynoted by Atty. Robert Torres and Marianas High School principal Craig Garrison. The latter used to be the principal of SSHS.
