3 tracksters off to Pacific Games
Northern Marianas Athletics will be sending three athletes to the 2011 Pacific Games in New Caledonia this August.
NMA developmental coach Elias Rangamar said they submitted the names of Douglas Dillay, Trevor Ogumoro, and Rachel Abrams to Northern Marianas Amateur Sports Association for inclusion on Team Marianas that will compete in Noumea less than three months from now.
NMASA president Michael White gave NMA and two other sports associations until June 15 (last Wednesday) to name their respective teams for the Pacific Games, as deadline for submission of entries by names is set for the end of this month. The early NMASA deadline will allow White to review the delegates’ documents before turning them over to organizers.
Rangamar said Dillay, Ogumoro, and Abrams were only three of the several CNMI athletes NMA will be sending to various off-island competitions this summer.
“We want to give all our athletes a chance to compete off-island and gain the needed exposure,” Rangamar said.
Dillay and Ogumoro are no longer strangers to a regional tournament, as they also suited up for the CNMI in the 2010 Micronesian Games in Palau, while Abrams will have her first off-island event.
Ogumoro represented the CNMI in the octathlon event in Palau and won a bronze medal. He also joined the men’s high and long jumps and finished fourth in both events and then came in fifth place in triple jump. Dillay ran in middle distance races in Palau. He placed 12th in the 400m run and 10th in the 800m race.
Abrams ruled the sprints in the 2011 McDonald’s/PSS All Schools Championships last month and topped one field event to emerge as the one of the two best athletes in the girls U18 division. The other was teammate Lia Rangamar. The sprinter dominated the 100m (12.71 seconds) and 200m (28.44 seconds) runs, and the high jump (1.33m), and led Marianas High School to victories in the 4x100m and 4x400m relays.
The three NMA bets will join the CNM golfers and spikers (beach volleyball) in the Pacific Games, which will run from Aug. 27 to Sept. 10.
