The United Filipino Organization has now opened the UFO basketball league to all players.

Dubbed as the 2011 UFO Basketball Friendship League, the competition will no longer bar players without Filipino lineage from suiting up starting this season.

“The United Filipino Organization is now given a go signal by the majority of its officers and board members to open the league to all players in all divisions. Our league continues to emphasize friendship, sportsmanship, and family participation. Invitations have been sent to a lot of teams as more slots are made available,” UFO president and league chair Bong Malasarte.

This year’s UFO league will have three divisions: midget, open, and masters. Only players in the 14 to 18 age group will be allowed to compete in the midget division, while the open and masters categories are for 19 to 39 and 40-and-above age groups, respectively.

Entrance fee is $750 per team, inclusive of complete uniform for a team with a 12-man roster, a coach, muse, and team banners.

Payments and rosters should be submitted on or before June 20, while filled-out waiver forms must be turned over by July 8. Rosters should be submitted via email for accuracy and clarity and teams have only until July 8 to make final changes in their lineups.

Squads interested in competing in this year’s UFO caging are asked to attend a meeting on Monday, June 20, at 6pm at the pavilion at the Civic Center in Susupe.

The UFO league is tentatively set to start on July 10 at the new TSL Sports Complex in Gualo Rai.

Games are initially scheduled every Tuesday and Thursday for masters and open divisions and Saturday for the midget category.

Expected to join this season’s competitions are defending champions MAFEA-Konflikt and Cabalen-Wings Travel. Konflikt swept MDX-Chow Queen in the best-of-three finals, while Cabalen-Wings Travel topped MAFEA-Ebisuya in the one-game title duel.
