CNMI netters sweep doubles crown
The CNMI Junior Tennis Team showed no mercy in the last day of the 2011 North Pacififc Qualifying Tournament at the Rick Ninete Tennis Center in Guam.
After ruling five of the six singles events last Thursday, the Commonwealth bets claimed five doubles championships at the conclusion of the NPQ yesterday. Winning doubles crowns for the CNMI were sisters Thea and Theecel Minor, Mikayla Lopez and Melody Johnson, Jake Lee and Christian Miller, Tammy Ackerman and Negahr Rastguiy, and Carl Dela Cruz and Moris Villanueva.
The Minor sisters clinched the girls U18 doubles championship against three other pairs. Other details of the doubles competition in the girls U18 doubles were unavailable at the Oceania Tennis Federation website at press time.
In the boys U15, Miller and Lee drew a bye in the first round and defeated fellow CNMI netters Chris Cajigan and Seiya Eda in the semifinals to advance to the finals. Lee and Miller went on to win the championship game against teammates Amami Sakano and Angelo Jones. In the girls U15, Lopez and Johnson bested four other teams to secure the championship.
In the U12 division, the tandem of Villanueva and Dela Cruz won over six other duos, including teammates Luther Lizama and Michael Jones and Colin Ramsey and Michael Ren. In the girls division, Ackerman and Rastguiy prevailed over two other teams.
Only five doubles competitions were played in the final day of the NPQ, as the boys U18 division lacked enough players for the event. Only four players were entered in the boys U18.
Several members of the victorious CNMI Junior Team were scheduled to return to Saipan last night after dominating the NPQ for the fourth straight time.
The Commonwealth ruled the U18 singles with Thea Minor and Rafael Jones topping separate foes. Miller and Lopez also won in the singles, prevailing in the U15 division, while Carl Dela Cruz reigned supreme in the boys U12 division.
The five singles champions also clinched slots on the North Pacific Team that will compete in the 2011 Pacific Oceania Junior Championships and 2011 Oceania Closed Junior Championships in Lautoka, Fiji in August. Joining them are Ackerman, Villanueva, Rastguiy, Lee, and Johnson.
