After the Carolinian Utt in Garapan, staff of the Dog Control Program of the Saipan Mayor’s Office is schedule to conduct dog tagging and registration in its next location at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium starting next week.

Program director Ray B. Lizama said yesterday that their team will be at the gym located in Oleai, the next licensing village site, from June 20 to 30.

“We would like to remind all dog owners to comply with the Dog Control Program. It’s the law,” he told Saipan Tribune.

According to Lizama, dog tags will determine the dog’s ownership. “When we do village visits and see dogs that don’t have tags, they will be considered stray dogs.”

As of yesterday afternoon, Lizama said that some 484 dog owners from different precincts have already registered their dogs.

When they started the dog tagging on June 6, Lizama said they required dog owners to bring their dogs along for the staff to take photographs of the dog to be registered.

“The photos are for record purposes. We will put them in our file so that when a dog owner loses a dog, we can just check the tag number and what the dog looks like. That way, we can easily find the missing dog,” he explained.

At present, Lizama said they tell dog owners that they themselves can take a photo of their dog and save it in a flash drive.

“They can just bring the flash drive when they go to the dog registration site and we’ll just upload it in our computer. Our waiting time now when tagging dogs is less than five minutes,” he said.

Lizama said this method helps pet owners who have two or more dogs that need to be registered.

“Some dog owners said they can’t fit their dogs in the car. Some have raised safety concerns but our staff is prepared because we have our cages and dog muzzles,” he said.

Lizama reminded all pet owners who want to register their dogs to proceed to any of the three government cashier offices first—Treasury Office in Capital Hill, Tax and Revenue Office in Dandan, or the Commonwealth Superior Court—before they go to the registration sites.

“We also want to remind dog owners who are senior citizens of 60 years or older that for a one-year license, they will pay $5 for altered dogs and $10 for non-altered dogs,” he added.
