The Saipan Major League Baseball is planning to hold a training camp before kicking off the 2011 Summer-Fall Youth Baseball League.

According to SML coordinator Tony Rogolifoi, to ensure that participants are well prepared for the opening day, SML members aims to conduct a training camp two-weeks prior to the league’s start up. All interested players are encouraged to take advantage of the free clinic.

More details concerning entry fees, waiver and entry forms, roster limits, and confirmed registration dates will be released soon. The league is tentatively scheduled to start either in late June or early July.

Meanwhile, organizers of the SML youth league are calling on interested teams to attend a meeting on June 21 at 6pm at the conference room of the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.

“This league is a developmental program aimed at teaching the basics and fundamentals of baseball for players ages 14 to 18. It aims to prepare them for transition into a higher level of competition and possible enrollment in various junior colleges in the mainland that offer baseball,” Rogolifoi said in a previous press release.

All games will be played under seven innings and since it is a developmental program, wooden bats will be used in place of metal ones.

Weather permitting, each team will be guaranteed to play 20 games or more, exclusive of the playoffs. However, to prevent injuries, this format will require a four-inning limit per pitcher, per game.

So far, six teams have already expressed their interests to register for the league.
