Entry by names in Noumea due today
The three sports associations sending delegates to the 2011 Pacific Games in New Caledonia have only until today to name their respective athletes for the regional competition.
So far, only golf has made a public announcement on the composition of the team with veteran par buster Jess Wabol leading the field. Joining him are Jeff Taylor, Tony Satur, and Adam Hardwicke.
Athletics and beach volleyball committed to send athletes to the Pacific Games, but an email inquiring about the names of their delegates to the quadrennial event has yet to be answered at press time.
In the past weeks several weeks, Northern Mariana Islands Volleyball Association has been conducting a series of training sessions with several Pacific Games hopefuls. Qualifying tournaments were also held early this year as one of the criteria for the selection of the CNMI Team. Tyce Mister and Chris Nelson topped the men’s qualifiers, while Melody Matson and Amanda Clarkson ruled the women’s division.
For athletics, Northern Marianas Athletics has been training a small group of athletes for several competitions this summer, including the Pacific Games. NMA is aiming to send two athletes to Noumea and in an earlier interview with the association, it’s official said they are hoping for the availability of Micronesia’s fastest woman Yvonne Bennett for the competition. Bennett had already confirmed her participation to the 2011 Oceania Regional Championships in Apia, Samoa later this month, but has yet to make an official announcement as far as her stint in Pacific Games is concerned. The second athlete may come from NMA’s pool of male athletes.
Northern Marianas Amateur Sports Association president Michael White has set the deadline for submission of entry by names two weeks before the actual Pacific Games deadline to have enough time to review the documents that will be submitted to organizers.
The 2011 Pacific Games will run from Aug. 27 to Sept. 10.
