The St. Michael Angels’ Thomas Joab and Tan Holdings Brewers’ Byron Kaipat claimed the coveted Most Valuable Player awards in the 2011 Saipan Major League.

The Angels ace pitcher was awarded the Finals MVP plum for leading his team to a 3-1 title series win over the Brewers, while Kaipat clinched the regular season MVP trophy.

The Brewers slugger walked to home plate on several occasions, as he received three more awards. Kaipat was named batting, RBI, and doubles champion. He finished the season with a 0.487 batting average, drove in 12 runs, and busted a league-best four doubles.

The awards presentation took place on Friday night after Game 4 of the championship series with SML’s Rose Igitol, Tony Rogolifoi, and Bob Coldeen handing trophies to other top performers of the season.

The Angels’ Franco Flores was declared Pitcher Of The Year and Earned Run Average champion. Flores won two games in the playoffs and maintained a miniscule 0.86 ERA during the season.

Jesus Iguel, also of the Angels, went home with the Golden Glove (outfield) and the most runs awards. Iguel crossed the plate 20 times this year. Iguel’s teammates, Craig Sanchez and John Flores, were named Coach and Manager of the Year, respectively.

The Catcher Of The Year award went to the Brewers Manny Sablan, while the IT&E Ol’Aces won the Sportsmanship Award.

Other awardees were home run champion Greg F. Camacho (Masters), who blasted two homers; Golden Glove (infield) winner Ryan Ada of Shell Fielders; strikeouts king Elton Santos, also of the Fielders, who sat down 72 batters; and Masters’ Jess Mesa, Ol’Aces’ Nunu Kapileo, Sen. Chrisostimo D-9ers’ Chris Camacho, and Fielders’ Eli Aughenbaugh and John Reyes, who led the league in triples with two apiece.
