House Speaker Eli Cabrera (R-Saipan) asked the Department of Public Works to install a permanent sign at the Koblerville Fire Station bearing its proper name—the Jose Terlaje Ada Building—to comply with Saipan Local Law 16-13.

The speaker also asked the Saipan Mayor’s Office to replace a Garapan Street sign with its proper name, Jesus T. Attao Road, as Saipan Local Law 15-17 requires.

The local law renaming the fire station, signed by Gov. Benigno R. Fitial on Feb. 12, 2010, requires DPW to install a permanent sign bearing the new name “no later than 60 days” after the law becomes effective.

“We as leaders of the Commonwealth are cognizant of the fact that our financial woes have limited us in our appropriating powers but this Saipan local law has been in the books since the 16th Commonwealth Legislature and it is important that we abide by our laws that (have) been set forth,” Cabrera told Sablan.

Jose Terlaje Ada, for whom the fire station was named after, is a former police officer, chief of the Fire Division and chief of Corrections until his retirement in 1986. He went back to the Department of Public Safety in 1995 and served as Fire Division director for two years.

Saipan Local Law 15-17, meanwhile, which was signed on Feb. 15, 2007, renames Garapan Street as the Jesus T. Attao Road, named after the former House of Representatives member who served eight consecutive terms. Attao worked in government for 35 years. The road named after him begins from Beach Road to Sugar King Road in Garapan.

Cabrera told Saipan Mayor Donald Flores that this local law, which has been in the books since the 15th Legislature, should be complied with.
