The 16-player cast for the VFW Post 3457 Battle of the Champions 9-Ball Tournament, was completed last Saturday after the final qualifying event at the Garapan sports bar and watering hole.

Claiming the last slot for the finale was Eric Caisip, who topped the Oct. 1 qualifier after beating Jimmy Wang. Caisip started his bid for the Battle of the Champions berth with a victory over Taylor Watanabe in the first round and then downed Eugene Borja in the second round. After two wins, Caisip advanced to the semifinals against Wang and prevailed anew. Wang dropped to the loser’s bracket and had to trip Victor Hocog to earn a rematch against Caisip.

In their second meeting, Caisip reasserted his mastery over Wang to move to the Battle of the Champions, joining Mark Butac, Borja, Erwin Gomez, Wang, Watanabe, Mike Pangelinan, Chester Cuento, Fredo Robego, Hocog, Butch Pangelinan, Richard Santos, Simon Kapileo, Jorge Pangelinan, Rolly Villanueva, and Rico Montano.

Set for Oct. 16, the Battle of the Champions is the culmination of a series of 9-ball tournaments VFW Post 3457 hosted. The weekly competition was held every Saturday and the winner of the double-elimination tournament earned a spot in the Battle of the Champion.

A trophy and cash prize await the winner of the final next week, while other gifts from sponsor Budweiser will also be handed out to the qualifiers.
