Mariana Islands Basketball Federation development officer Elias Rangamar is reminding interested players that tryouts for slots on the national men’s and women’s teams will begin on Monday at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.

The tryouts are for the teams that will be competing in the 9th Micronesian Games set from July 15 to 28 at the Yap Sports Complex in Yap.

The first day of the tryouts on Monday is for the women’s team and will run from 6pm to 8pm, while another one is set on Saturday, Feb. 10, from 1pm to 3pm. Men’s tryouts will be held on Saturdays, from 3:30pm to 5:30pm on Feb.10 and from 3pm to 5pm on Feb. 17.

Tinian and Rota will be holding their respective tryouts and those selected will be joining the national training pool on Saipan. They will then participate in the next round of tryouts on Saipan before Rangamar makes the final selection.

The national coach, in an earlier interview, said aside from getting tall players, he will also look for versatile members of their squads.

“I hope to form teams that have all-around players. They handle the ball, get rebounds, and shoot,” Rangamar said. “I’m going to look at players with more athleticism and have good outside shooting. These are my criteria and I’m going to look for that in the tryouts.”

In other news, Rangamar also reminded teams that the three leagues for different age groups will open this month, starting with the Lunch Hoop 3×3 Tournament, which will have a mixed and open divisions. A meeting is set on Tuesday, Feb. 6, at the Ada gym’s conference room.

The Francisco M. Diaz Memorial Youth League is next for boys U15 and U18 and will kick off on Feb. 12. A separate meeting is set on Feb. 7 at 5:30pm also at the Ada gym conference room.

The MIBF is also looking to start the Island-Wide Premier Basketball League for men’s and women’s on Feb. 14, Wednesday.
