Basketball, badminton share spotlight

Basketball games were played all over the courts on Saipan last week, while Northern Marianas Badminton Association completed the title matches in the IT&E Singles & Mixed Doubles Badminton Tournament 2012 at the NMBA Gym at the TSL Sports Complex in Gualo Rai.

In the UFO Docomo Pacific Cup at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium, MDX/Armatech stunned the then undefeated SMF/DYS in the U14 division, pulling off a 72-70 win in their second outing. In the U20 division, MDX/Mariana Resort and AON/Boholano also eked out close wins over Hi-Five and DeMolay, respectively.

In the UFO Masters Budweiser Cup, defending champion MDX/Armatech swept the round-robin regulation to top the six-team league, while Bayani/LBT Appraisal finished second with a 4-1 card. Laguna/Twinkle/Erik’s placed third with its 3-2 card, followed by VisMinda/Civic Boys (1-4) and MAFEA/CMI (0-5).

In the DLX/DL JOS caging at the Gualo Rai Basketball Court, KFC grabbed a share of the lead after downing the then unbeaten Fastbreakers, while Docomo notched three straight wins.

Over at the Gualo Rai Basketball Court for the Blue Haus caging, Ashley’s and Wanted Sponsor recorded separate wins last week.

For the Docomo youth league, which is also being played at the Garapan court, Proa and Loving Hands won their respective U17 games, while Shottas and Peacemakers prevailed in the U25 matches.

Still at the Garapan court, Young Guns and the Hoops won their debuts in thee Rollers Basketball Club’s inaugural Mini-Rascals Youth Basketball Tournament.

In badminton, NMBA played the championship matches in the men’s and women’s singles and mixed doubles A of the IT&E tournament. Andreau Galvez and Hannah Choi repeat as champions in the men’s and women’s singles A divisions, respectively; Jexler Caranto and Toshiko Obata ruled the B division; and Brandon Talania and Roma Barlao reigned supreme in the C division. In the mixed doubles A finals, Galvez and Angie Ito defeated Ferdie Arago and Lani Bartolome.

Meanwhile, other on-going tournaments/leagues on Saipan continued with the Saipan Major League and the Chamolinian softball league having their regular season games at the Francisco “Tan Ko” Palacios Ballfield and the Capital Hill Ballfield, respectively.
