‘Bark in the Park’ at AMP this Friday
This week in 1946 all combat dogs that were serving in the Pacific during World War II were returned to the United States.
In honor of these canine heroes, the American Memorial Park and Pacific Historic Parks will be hosting “Bark in the Park,” an event commemorating their services during the war, on Friday, Jan. 8.
Starting at 3:30pm visitors will have the opportunity to personalize dog tags and make military decorations for their canine friends. The memorials located within American Memorial Park will be available for touring as well as posters spotlighting Saipan’s canine heroes and handlers.
These canines were originally just pets donated to the war effort. They were sent to training (where many did not make the cut) along with their handlers and finally sent overseas to fight in the war. They alerted to Banzai attacks, provided security at night, detected booby traps, inspected enemy pillboxes, and so much more.
They saved many lives and helped keep morale up. At 6pm in the amphitheater of American Memorial Park the movie “War Dogs of the Pacific” will be shown (running time 45 minutes). We hope you all can join us for this event. During the event we ask that you please keep your dog on a leash and clean up after them.
