Bank of Saipan and the Cubs scored similar one-sided victories over their respective opponents in the Majors division of the 2018 Saipan Little League Baseball last Saturday at the Miguel “Tan Ge” Basa Pangelinan Ballfield.
Bank of Saipan cruised to a 14-5 win over the Comets, while the Cubs were merciless against the Twins and dealt their opponents a 23-1 crushing.
Greg Perez had a lot of defensive support from the infield to help Bank of Saipan clinch its second straight win.
Perez was tagged with three earned runs on 10 hits. He fanned six and had no walks in five plus innings on the mound. Demarlane Santos replaced him after three batters at the bottom of the sixth. Perez, before sitting out the sixth, struck out Comets leadoff batter Banjo Manglona and picked up a Sunny Pangelinan grounder for a 1-3 play and quick two outs. He then gave up a single to Anton Indalecio before Santos replaced him.
Santos got the last out when the relief pitcher forced Fernando Sanchez to fly out to right fielder Scott Iglesias.
Ezra Ada went 2-for-4 with three runs, while Jesse Stole was 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI in Bank of Saipan’s eight-run inning at the top of the fifth inning.
Patty Mendiola tossed 4.5 innings in start for the Comets, surrendering an earned run on six hits with six strikeouts and two walks.
Cubs 23, Twins 1
Jaydon Lizama, Albert Adriano, and Joaquin Lizama had an RBI each in their team’s 12-run scoring barrage in the third inning.
Adriano went perfect at the plate, 3-for-3, and scored four runs. His bunt single in the fourth moved Jaydon Lizama to third before the latter scored on a miscue by the Twins, who committed a total of 22 errors.
Roque Celis pitched a near-shutout game allowing a hit—a leadoff single to Alfred Gonzales in the first—while fanning five and walking one.
Pinch runner M.J. Tudela scored the lone run for the Twins when he stole home at the bottom of the second.
Meanwhile, no games were played in the Junior League division last Saturday at the Francisco “Tan Ko” Palacios Ballfield, as the first match between the Braves and the Falcons was cancelled due to the wet field, while Comets I won by default against Comets II.
