Bank of Guam donates $50K for Saipan residents
»Recovery will be ‘ongoing and difficult’
HAGATNA, Guam—Bank of Guam announced yesterday that it is contributing a total of $50,000 toward the direct assistance of Saipan residents affected by Typhoon Soudelor.
Bank of Guam president, chief executive officer, and board chair Lou A. Leon Guerrero stated: “The Bank of Guam is contributing $20,000 to Karidat, $20,000 to the Saipan Red Cross and $10,000 to the Salvation Army, which will go directly to helping the Saipan community.”
Since Saipan was struck by Typhoon Soudelor on Aug. 2, 2015, Karidat has assisted displaced families with temporary housing and food vouchers. The Saipan Red Cross is providing dislocated families with monetary debit cards, temporary housing with tents, blankets, cleaning supplies, water bottles and more. It is estimated they will have assisted 6,000 households. The Salvation Army is feeding daily meals at their center to displaced families or those with limited resources.
Bank of Guam’s “Soudelor Aid” account continues to accept contributions from individuals, groups and companies in this ongoing effort to help the Saipan community. The account contributions will be divided in the same proportion as the Bank of Guam corporate donation.
The Bank of Guam 90-day loan payment deferment program for its Saipan loan customers provides cash for much needed recovery.
Bank of Guam has extended financial assistance to its employees on Saipan in support of their needs during the recovery period. Additionally, the Bank of Guam Employee Club is collecting items directly for its Saipan branch employees.
Lou A. Leon Guerrero said: “Our Saipan families have been affected by the most destructive storm in years, and we realize that recovery will be a long and gradual process. Our efforts to help will be ongoing and responsive.”
The Garapan branch and Chalan Piao facility will be operating with limited hours between 9am and 3pm Monday through Friday. Saturday hours are suspended until further notice.
Bank of Guam, with assets over $1.4 billion, is in its 43rd year with 23 branches throughout Guam and Western Micronesia. Bank of Guam has had a presence on Saipan since 1980. (Bank of Guam)
