The Pardz Ballers got off to a good start in the 2019 One Pacific Promotional Basketball League after winning its first two games at the Civic Center Court in Susupe.
Pardz topped Gilas Batang last Friday, 75-61, for a fitting follow-up on its 99-52 debut win over Saipan Adventures during the Tsingtao Beer-sponsored league’s opening day late last month.
Against Gilang Batang, Pardz went all out in the fourth quarter to battle back from a lackluster showing in the second period. Pardz was held to 8 points in the second canto, allowing Gilas Batang to grab the lead at the break, 35-27, after falling behind in the first quarter, 13-18.
Pardz then started to regain its bearings at the start of the second half to cut the deficit to only a deuce at the end of the third period, 47-49. John Jose scored 9 points in the penultimate frame to bring Pardz back into the game with one quarter left.
After Jose stepped up in the third frame, it was Rocyl Ritual’s turn to lead Pardz in the fourth with the latter scoring 10 points. Pardz went on to complete its recovery after more than doubling Gilas Batang’s output in the final period, 28-12, to take the early lead in the 12-team league with its 2-0 record.
Joseph Torres also backed up Ritual, adding 7 markers, while three other Pardz players contributed at least two baskets apiece in their fourth-quarter assault.
Gilas Batang, which has yet to enter the win column after two games, combined for only 26 point in the second half, allowing Pardz to steal the victory.
The Pardz-Gilas Batang was the only game completed last Friday, while Saturday and yesterday’s matches were all rained-out.
Meanwhile, Torres, Ritual, Jose, and Ronald Bernardo all scored in twin digits for Pardz as they demolished Saipan Adventures in one of the opening games in the league.
