Election Commission has new chief
The Commonwealth Election Commission board finally selected a new executive director after weeks of intense deliberation.
The board voted to hire Robert Guerrero to the position left vacant by Gregorio Sablan, who left the post to run as the islands’ first representative to the U.S. Congress in November last year.
Board chairwoman Frances Sablan said the candidate formally accepted the job offer yesterday and would report for work on June 1.
Guerrero, according to the board, will be provided a salary mandated by the Constitution and approved under a “continuing” contract. This means he will serve at the pleasure of the board and will remain at his post until the board says otherwise.
Saipan Tribune learned that Guerrero bested three other candidates to the position after getting the unanimous approval of the seven-member board.
The board made its decision last week but waited for the candidate to accept the job offer before announcing its choice, according to Sablan.
Sablan said Guerrero will play an important role in this year’s general election where a four-way gubernatorial race is in the offing.
Guerrero, she said, held a number of managerial positions in the private sector prior to becoming CEC executive director.
