Free phone cards for troops in Kuwait
The CNMI’s troops with the Echo Company in Kuwait will be receiving next week free phone cards for them to be able to contact their families back home.
The phone cards came from the Military Order of the Purple Heart through the Veterans and Military Affairs Office on Saipan.
VMAO Executive Officer Ruth A. Coleman turned over a total of 78 phone cards (one-hour calls) to Staff Sgt. Francisco Ada during the proclamation signing of Memorial Week (May19-25) at the Governor’s Office last Tuesday.
Ada, along with Sgt. Royal Kelby, attended the proclamation ceremony with Lt. Gov. Eloy S. Inos signing the document before members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and spouses of those killed in action.
Ada and Kelby are part of the last group that is currently on a 12-day R&R.
The group will be joining Monday’s Memorial Day ceremony at the Veterans Cemetery in Marpi.
Asked about the situation of the 70-man troop from the CNMI, Ada said they are doing well. “Kuwait is a green zone, so we are safe there,” he said.
Their battalion provides convoy and logistics escort to U.S. troops.
He said majority of Kuwaitis support the U.S. military.
For the moment, Ada said they are enjoying their vacation with their families before going back to Kuwait next week.
The CNMI reservists were activated last year. They will be completing their assignment in August.
“Everybody misses home,” said Ada, who has two kids, an 18-year old son and 15-year old daughter.
