Chester Hamoy was the first to raise the Ronelsie Cup after topping the unofficial “Battle of Billiards champions” last Thursday at the Round Two Bar and Grill.

Hamoy topped an eight-man field after beating veteran cue artist Senen Pangilinan in the finals, 3-1, at the Garapan sports bar and watering hole.

The two got out of the first round to join Roger “The Ghost” Espiritu and Boyet Sequioco in the semifinals of the abbreviated tournament.

The tournament was supposed to be a competition among the 15 past champions of Round Two’s regular Thursday 8-Ball Tournament, but when the tournament started, only eight showed up to play.

Hamoy got off to a fine start, beating jolly Eric Santos in a score of 3-1. It was probably the evening that rained 3-1, as the three other opening round matches ended in the same score.

Espiritu upended affable Chamorro pool practitioner Victor Hocog, 3-1; Pangilinan beat Primo Ferrera, 3-1; and Sequioco, who helped organized the event, defeated Juancho Mendoza, 3-1.

In the third round, Hamoy pulled off an upset of Espiritu, nicknamed The Ghost for his knack of spooking out opponents, by exorcising him in a score of 3-1.

Pangilinan, meanwhile, proved to be the steadier hand in his showdown with Sequioco, advancing to the championship round with another 3-1 victory.

In the finals, Hamoy continued his giant-killing ways by dominating his more experienced opponent in every turn to take the one-game championship and the $100 first place purse and Ronelsie Cup trophy. Pangilinan won $60 for all his troubles and a medal.

Aside from the eight who did show up Thursday, others invited in the Ronelsie Cup were Jerry Soriano, Rolly Villanueva Nolan Cultura, Eric Caisip, Patrick Taitano, Taylor Watanabe, and Jomer Enriquez.

Named after tournament sponsors Ronnie and Elsie Ringor, the special tournament was a race-to-three affair that used a single elimination format. It had an entry fee of $20.

Round Two Bar and Grill envisions to hold the Ronelsie Cup every three months. Meanwhile, its regular Thursday 8-Ball Tournament is held every Thursday with a $10 entry fee. Games start at 9pm. For more information about the competitions, contact Ricky Vertudez at 234-6930.
