Inos proclaims May 18-23 as MMAC Week
Acting Gov. Eloy S. Inos signed yesterday a proclamation designating May18-23 as 2009 Marianas March Against Cancer Week during a simple ceremony at the Bank of Guam office in Garapan.
This event aims to heighten awareness of cancer, one of the main causes of deaths in the CNMI.
Witnessing the proclamation signing ceremony were members of the community, including representatives of the different MMAC sponsors, government officials, cancer survivors, and organizers of the march.
The MMAC week will culminate this Friday evening, May 23, at Hopwood Junior High School track and field.
Commonwealth Cancer Association president Alex Sablan said the money collected from the fundraising campaigns are being used to purchase items for the Commonwealth Health Center. The main beneficiaries are cancer survivors and patients.
Sablan thanked those who were present during the signing ceremony for coming together to support this effort.
Four cancer survivors were present: Bobby Ayres, Nora Sablan, Maggie Camacho, and Annie Hayes.
Title sponsors include Bank of Guam, IT&E, Delta/Northwest Airlines, Take-Care/FHP, Sorensen Media Group, Duty Free Shoppers, and the Joeten Charitable Foundation.
The major sponsors are Bank of Saipan, Saipan Mayor’s Office, Younis Arts Studio, Docomo Pacific, Shell Marianas, Bank of Hawaii, Angil Design, Hyatt Regency Saipan, Images Saipan Ltd., and DFS Durables Club Saipan.
Docomo’s Absalon Waki Jr. also turned over a $1,000 check donation during the proclamation ceremony.
