Gov. Benigno R. Fitial signed into law a bill renaming the Rota Veteran Memorial Park the Corporal Joe G. Charfauros Jr. Rota Veteran Memorial Park, in honor of the fallen soldier.

House Bill 16-52, introduced by Sen. Paterno S. Hocog, is now Public Law 16-40. Fitial signed the law on May 12.

Charfauros, 33, was one of four U.S. soldiers killed on June 20, 2007, in Baghdad, Iraq following injuries sustained from an improvised explosive device that blew up near their vehicle. The soldiers were assigned to the 1st Battalion, 64th Armor Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Steward, Georgia.

Rota Legislative Delegation Commemorative Resolution 15-3 said the bill’s intent is to recognize and commend Charfauros’s courage and valor so that he shall be forever remembered by the grateful people of Rota and the CNMI.

Charfauros was a police officer on Rota. He went back to Rota in December 2006 for his wedding to wife Stellita. They had three children—Mikeangela, Junelle and Joe II.

The new law directs the Division of Parks and Recreation to commission and provide for signage reflecting the park name change.
