The 7th Annual Mount Carmel School Golf Tournament held last Saturday drew a total of 79 participants to the delight of the school’s president Margaret Dela Cruz.

“The tournament was really successful. I was anticipating there would be maybe 60 players but we had a total of 79 players that showed up today. Everyone was here and we’re just very, very pleased with the support that our golfers have given to Mt. Carmel School,” said Dela Cruz during an interview after the awards banquet held on the grounds of the Laolao Bay Golf Resort.

She said it really means a great deal for Mt. Carmel to see the golfing community come out in full force and support the island’s lone Catholic learning institution.

“Just on the players themselves, we already have $7,900 based on the $100 entry fee for each. But remember, we still have to pay the club. So, we’re really looking at between $6,000 to $7,000 that we raised today.”

Dela Cruz also couldn’t hide her jubilation on the unexpected win of junior golfer Chang Kyun Kim, who is an alumnus of the Chalan Kanoa-based institution.

“I’m very proud of him. Actually when he walked up and registered this morning he said ‘Ms. Dela Cruz I’m here to play. I really miss Mt. Carmel.’ And I said Mt. Carmel probably did something good to you. He said, ‘Yes, definitely!’ I’m so proud of him for giving back and helping support our school.”

Chang won the championship flight of the golfest with a 2-under par 70 and led the list of winners in the golf fundraiser.

Jess “Mr. Unorthodox” Wabol was second in the championship flight with his even 72. Another Korean, Jung Won Lee, actually tied Wabol’s 72 but settled for second runner-up after losing via scorecard tiebreak.

Joining Chang in the champions’ list last Saturday were Rene Batallones (A flight), Jose Itibus (B flight), John Matsumoto (C flight), Edward Manibusan (Seniors flight), and Yang Kim (Ladies flight).
