A Japanese religious group making its annual pilgrimage to the Northern Mariana Islands took time from their devotions to make a donation in person to Marianas Visitors Authority during their recent visit.

Priest Ryoyu Okeya made the donation on Monday, May 11, on behalf of Nempo Shinkyo Group. Two hundred members of the group held memorial services on Sunday to pray for victims of World War II on Saipan and world peace.

Memorial services were held at the Japanese Peace Memorial and Banzai Cliff, where the group built a memorial tower last year as an affirmation of their commitment to return to the Northern Marianas each year.

“It’s very humbling that, even as visitors themselves, Nempo Shinkyo Group would choose to support our tourism efforts,” said Marianas Visitors Authority managing director Perry Tenorio in receiving the donation. “This donation will be used to help maintain the area where their memorial tower is at Banzai Cliff, which is one of our most popular and scenic visitor sites on Saipan.” (MVA)
