The ticket of Republican Party gubernatorial candidate Juan N. Babauta and running mate Galvin Deleon Guerrero is tapping the World Wide Web to boost their campaign for the upcoming primary election on June 27.

Besides their personal e-mail accounts, the tandem also launched a centralized e-mail account for their team, on top of a newly built Web site.

In a news briefing Thursday, Deleon Guerrero said they have also created accounts in social networking sites MySpace and Facebook to ensure they’re reaching a greater number of people here and off-island.

All these are now active and are providing positive outcome to the party as more people are informed of the candidates’ up-to-the-minute activities.

Since most people aged 20 through 40 use digital technology, Deleon Guerrero said he can’t think of any better way to reach them simultaneously, especially in a bad economy.
With politics and elections getting increasingly complex, the team believes that technology is perhaps the only medium that can create a level playing field for all candidates.

“It’s very effective…and cheaper too,” Deleon Guerrero told Saipan Tribune, noting the important role that will be played by the island’s digital generation in next month’s primary.

Babauta and Deleon Guerrero, along with the team’s committee to elect chairman, Ed Guerrero, said it is important to reach out and generate awareness in order to win the campaign. It is also a sure way of learning people’s opinion on various social and economic issues on the island, they added.

The Babauta-Deleon Guerrero team will face the tandem of Heinz Hofschneider and Arnold Palacios in the local GOP primary next month.

Though absentee voters are not permitted to join the primary election, Deleon Guerrero said the GOP will keep “networking” with them for the general election.

As of May 1, there are a total of 13,454 registered voters on three islands—all of whom are being encouraged to participate in the Republican primary poll.

Ed Guerrero said both camps have agreed not to build any tents beside or within the polling areas on primary day.

“That’s the agreement and we’re serious in what we have agreed upon with the other camp,” Guerrero told Saipan Tribune.
