The Inaugural Tinian Moonlight Fun Run drew 28 participants, who all enjoyed a leisurely walk and run under the May full moon last Saturday at Taga Beach.

“There were a lot of participants, more than we expected,” said Joshua Manglona, who co-organized the event with fellow Tinian triathlete Janet King. “The people were all smiles, because they were happy to have something like this.”

King said the idea of having the fun run/walk came out to take advantage of the May full moon and spice up a healthy and positive event for youth of Tinian.

Participants started the run/walk from Taga Beach to the scenic lookout where the Limestone Trail is located and back to Taga Beach.

Termites greeted runners/walkers at the start of the event, but when darkness fell, participants enjoyed a smooth cruise.

“There were termites, but the termite frenzy lasted only a few minutes,” Manglona said. “Then the full moon came out from behind the horizon and they disappeared, and from thereon it was a good time for everyone.”

Ken Mojica completed the run course of the six-mile event around 50 minutes and later one runner after another was safely back at Taga Beach.

“Ken is a cross country runner and a really good runner,” Manglona said. “This event really brought out the true talents of our youth, and it shows that they were just waiting for something like this.”

Other finishers were Rajendra Rijal, Joeray Manglona, Kedar Shrestha, Juan Atalig, Fe Lumangles, Paula Evangelista, Velma Reyes, Eugene Mendiola, and Kevan Clawson.

“We hope there can be more sports events for the kids and for adults, too,” Manglona added.

Registration fees collected from the fun run were donated to Tinian Athletic Sports Association.

Meanwhile, King and Manglona thanked the following for supporting the Moonlight Run: Tinian Mayor’s Office, DFS Galleria, Pacific Trading Co., and Sen. Jude Hofschneider.
