Three siblings from Kagman are doing good in their studies in the U.S. mainland after earning scholarship awards in their respective alma maters in Killeen, Texas, where their parents decided to settle last year.

Ruby R. Somorang, 16, of Robert Shoemaker High School, recently earned a spot in the National High School Scholar Society.

Older brother Lucian, 18, was awarded a full college scholarship grant from Killeen Knight of Rotary. Lucian will pursue a degree in Building Maintenance.

Their mother, Katherine M. Rangamar, said another sibling, 9-year-old Joy, is also a standout in her class.

“My husband Herman and I are very proud of our kids’ achievements and dedication to their education,” Katherine said in an e-mail.

The family moved to the U.S. mainland in August 2008, primarily to avail of the best education opportunities for their three children.

All three attended Kagman High School and Kagman Elementary School.

Lucian, the eldest, is currently in his senior year at Pathways Academy under the Killeen Independent School District. He is currently enrolled at the Career & Technical Education Academy with a keen interest in Building Maintenance and will be graduating this summer June 6..

He has been selected to receive an Evening Rotary scholarship opportunity.

“He made the best impression of his goals and proved himself to be the best candidate for the Killeen Evening Rotary Grant Award,” Katherine said of her son.

She said Lucian was interviewed by a panel of eight with questions such as why he should be the best recipient among 50 students with high achieving grades.

“This interview was very stiff but he came out on top. It’s been awarded to only one recipient and Lucian impressed them all,” she said.

A special presentation ceremony was held April 28 at the Shilo Inn in Killeen.

For her daughter Ruby, Katherine said her daughter’s outstanding academic achievements and her hard work earned her a spot in the National High School Scholar Society, resulting in invitations to join other outstanding high school scholars groups.
