Three unbeaten in beach V-ball
Hits for Brains led the list of undefeated teams in the Miller Lite/Monster 4-Person Beach Volleyball League 2009 after Week 1 of competition on the Pacific Islands Club sand court.
The Rob Jordan-led squad is unbeaten in two games, joining Numa Numa and UMESSUPUOUT in the early lead in the 12-team field.
Hits For Brains debuted with a 21-9, 21-16, 19-17 victory over Angry Red Dragon on May 5 and made it 2-0 after topping Plum Smugglers last Thursday.
According to Dale Roberts, one of coordinators of the league, Hits for Brains was unbeaten in six sets in those two games, as Andreas Buitrago and Lindsay Sosovec played solid defense to complement Larry Sharry’s big kills on the net.
Also perfect after two games, winning five of six sets was Numa Numa. The Typhoon Saito-anchored squad edged Hoof Hearted in its debut, 21-14, 21-16, 10-15 during the league’s opening on May 5, and then tripped South Beach last Thursday.
UMESSUPUOUT prevailed over Plum Smugglers and MHS Bobais to keep its record clean, too.
Dan Westphal was at the forefront of UMESSUPUOUT’s defense on both wins, while Melody Matson and Scott Eck took care of business on the offensive end.
Grace Christian Academy, one of the three high school teams in the league, split its first two games. After losing their debut to Red Angry Dragon, the GCA Eagles redeemed themselves against MHS Bobais.
Brandon Chargualaf and Keith Sablan’s strong hits and Philnea Atalig’s good passing lifted GCA to a sweep against MHS Bobais’ Yihao Liang, Mildred Kintol, and Jeff Bacani.
MHS Bobais dropped to a 0-2 start, while sister team MHS One Heart also lost its debut against We’re Here last Wednesday. We’re Here joined four other teams (Hoof Hearted, South Beach, GCA, and Angry Red Dragon) with identical 1-1 records.
Games in this year’s four-person league are played every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. The league has a round-robin format in the regular season with the top eight teams advancing to the playoffs, which will be a single-elimination affair.
