Private companies have begun showing their support for the monthlong Liberation Day Festival, according to the Office of the Mayor of Saipan.

JC Tenorio Enterprises has just committed a flat screen TV and a woman’s bicycle to be included in the raffle. Northwest Airlines has also signified its intention to sponsor the grand prize.

The Legislature had appropriated $35,000 for the celebration, while the rest of the expenses would be raised from solicitation and sponsorships.

Food vendors will pay a concession fee of $800, while those selling liquor will pay $1,200.

The United Filipino Organization has volunteered to help build the stage and some of the booths at the event’s venue at Garapan Fishing Base.

Some 2,000 booklets will be initially prepared for the Liberation Day Queen competition, with each booklet to cost $5 each. The organizing committee said each candidate will keep 20 percent of the total funds they will raise while 80 percent will go to the municipality.

For the first time in four years, the Liberation Queen contest will be open to all nationalities. However, only one slot will be given to all ethnicities, be it Korean, Filipino, Chinese, Russian, American, Japanese, Chamorro, Carolinian and others.

Because of financial difficulties, the fireworks display would not be as big as in previous year’s.

This year’s Liberation Day Festival will run from June 5 to July 5.
