Former first lady Sophia Tenorio and 88-year-old Japanese Jo Izumi were among the 112 participants of Sunday morning’s 10th Annual SOPHIA Walk.

Held on Mother’s Day, the SOPHIA Walk also drew other prominent people in the community like Northern Marianas College president Carmen Fernandez, Mike Tenorio, Dennis Yoshimoto, Takahashi Masanori, Jerry Facey, Ben Babauta, and Bruce Bateman.

Named after the former first lady, SOPHIA Walk also stands for Saipan Outdoor Physical Health Invigorating Adventure.

Izumi, meanwhile, arrived from Japan together with 12 other members of the Nippon Turtle Association.

The group has been a frequent visitor of the islands and always takes part in the events of Saipan Walking Association, Inc., the former name of event organizer Marianas Walking Association.

The activity started from the Carolinian Utt Pavilion in Garapan and had two courses. The longer 10-kilometer course took participants south all the way to the Oleai bus stop, which was the turning point (near Oleai Beach & Bar), and back to the Carolinian Utt.

For the shorter 5-km course, the turning point was located at the Old World War II Japanese Tank.
