Saipan-based Filipino organizations were represented at the joint celebration of Philippine Labor Day and the 27th anniversary of the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration last Saturday at the Canton Restaurant in Garapan.

Over a hundred guests and officials from the Philippine Consulate General led by Consul General Wilfredo Dl. Maximo, Labor Representative Joan Lourdes D. Lavilla and Welfare Officer Reynaldo Tayag and heads of various organizations were in attendance.

Leading the 19 Filipino groups were the United Filipino Organization, Bayani Association, Marinas Institute of Filipino Certified Public Accountants and Marianas Association of Filipino Engineers and Architects.

Other groups represented at the event were the Marianas Filipino Women’s Association, Visayas Mindanao Association, Samahang Ilocano at Pangasinense, National Movement for Free Election, MDX Radio Group, CNMI Power Corporation Inc. and Samahang Mangagawang Filipino.

The others were Sirkulo Boholano Delas Islas Marianas, UP Alumni Association – CNMI Chapter, Multi-Sectoral Overseas Filipino Workers Movement, Pilipino Contract Overseas Workers Association, FilCom & Simbang Gabi, Saipan Building and Fixing Computer Users Group, Bicol Association, and CHC Volunteer Nurses for Free Health Screening.

Maximo read the Labor Day message of Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

Arroyo said the culture of excellence that overseas Filipino workers have exhibited, whether they are working at home or in more than 190 host destinations worldwide, is the best assurance “that we will be able to weather this [economic] crisis.”

Labor Secretary Marianito D. Roque also extended his message to all overseas Filipino workers, saying they continue to boost the economy.

Roque assured that job generation is a major strategy of the government to alleviate massive poverty.

He said with the current global crisis, OFWs are lucky to provide hope for their families back home.
