PSS to name 10 new Byrd scholarship recipients
Ten local students from the Commonwealth’s private and public high schools would soon be named as the new recipients of the Byrd Honors Scholarship grants that are extended to the CNMI every year.
The grants, totaling to $6,000 per awardee, is a four-year scholarship assistance providing $1,500 per year to recipients.
The federally funded Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarships is for high school students graduating this year. It is highly competitive, requiring a minimum grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
To be eligible for the grant assistance, a student must be a 2009 graduate from the CNMI.
Every year, over 30 students compete for the scholarship grant, said PSS federal programs officer Tim Thornburgh. Last year 15 scholars were selected.
Recipients of the fund are expected to be honored by the Byrd Scholarship Program during the students’ graduation ceremony.
Interested students, Thornburgh said, must have applied or been accepted for enrollment at a college or university and must submit an essay justifying their desire to pursue a college education.
Deadline for submission is at the end of this month. A review committee of educators from both public and private institutions will assess all applications and will make the determination.
Administered by the U.S. Department of Education, the scholarship program is designed to recognize exceptionally able high school seniors who show promise of continued excellence in postsecondary education. The USDOE awards funds to state education agencies which make scholarship awards to eligible applicants.
