NMC holds Charter Day fete today

Students, staff, and faculty of the Northern Marianas College are inviting the community to join in on the 28th Annual Charter Day festivities tonight from 4pm to 11pm. Headlining the event will be the Marianas Idol, Charter Day Dance Crew, and Battle of the Bands competitions.

NMC will also make history in today’s celebration, as four individuals will be recognized for their commitment and dedication to the mission of the college: the Student of the Year, Staff of the Year, Faculty of the Year, and Supervisor of the Year.

The outstanding list is also called the NMC PROA Awards.

NMC president Dr. Carmen Fernandez said the college is “extremely excited” to present the honors.

“We look forward to recognizing and honoring the hard work and dedication of our students and our employees. Charter Day affords the community an opportunity to participate in this important celebration and recognition,” said Fernandez.

Awardees were selected by a panel composed of student, staff, faculty, supervisor and alumni representatives. The college closed the nominations on Wednesday.

For the Student of Year award, a nominee must be a full-time student, involved in college activities, has maintained a GPA of 2.5 cumulative, and must have outstanding contributions in community service.

Eligibility for the Staff of the Year award includes a two-year consecutive full-time employment at the college, involvement in extra-curricular activities that promote NMC, good attendance and in good standing, maintains a professional demeanor, and promotes and supports institutional goals.

For the Faculty of the Year award, recipient must be employed at NMC full-time for a minimum of two consecutive years, must be involved in extra-curricular activities that promote the college, and must maintain a professional demeanor.

The Supervisor of the Year award would go to a non-teaching individual who holds a supervisory position full-time for a minimum of two years, active in extra-curriculum activities, has good attendance and is in good standing. He/she must also provide assistance to subordinates.

The Charter Day festivities will also showcase the talent and performances of several well-known groups on the island, including Uncle Ben’s, local dance group Inatuas Cultural Dancers, Carolinian Warriors, and Kings & Dreamers. Tonight’s event will also include a performance from local entertainer Maggie Naputi and the Go For Broke Band.

Booths with various offerings are also stationed at the campus field starting at noon.
