Fifteen-year-old Joseph Martin bested 13 other students from Marianas High School to win for himself a trip to next month’s Maui Art Festival.

Mayor Juan B. Tudela announced the winners of the painting contest during a simple ceremony at his office yesterday morning. This year’s contest theme was “The Pathway to Peace.”

Martin’s artwork was titled “The Journey up the Sun.” His awards include a trophy, gift certificates from McDonald and Saipan World Resort and a cash prize.

Joining him in Maui, Hawaii, for the art festival on June 8-11 are second placer Richard Ken Matsuyama and third place Granada Earllon.

Matsuyama’s artwork was titled “Choosing the Right Path to Peace” while Earllon’s was titled “Freedom is Not Free”

Jason Anthony D. Quibldt was given the Honorable Mention Award with his “Walk Together.”

The four winners all received prizes from McDonald’s and Saipan World Resort.

The other students who joined the contests were Leni Joy Cruz (“My First Drawing”), Dae Hwan Jung (“Difficult Times”), Diego Camacho (“A Long Red Brick Road”), Mar Anthony Peter Hosono (“Choices”), Panidta Torres (“Trailing Tranquility”), Michelle Camacho (“Paradise of Peace”), Andy Tse (“Rainbow Road to Heaven”), Keneisha Parks (“Serenity in Midst of Chaos”), Christine Tokiko Rengiil (“Sight of Journey”), and Jeric Maglonzo (“Guardian Angel’s Path”).

MHS Principal Karen Borja, who accompanied the students, thanked the Mayor of Saipan for this annual activity.

It would be the third time since 2005 that Saipan will send representatives to the Maui Art Festival, the same year when the sister city agreement between the two was established.

“Good job, students. This is an annual event that my office has always been asked to sponsor. I have been always upbeat to host this contest and excited to award the prizes,” said Tudela, who expressed appreciation to the support given by McDonald’s and Saipan World Resort.
